Applying remotely sensed habitat descriptors to assist reintroduction programs: A case study in the hazel dormouse

چکیده
Abstract For reintroduction programs to succeed, it is vital identify suitable release sites. This especially true for low dispersing habitat specialists, which are at particular risk from fragmentation. The specialist Muscardinus avellanarius (hazel dormouse) part of a large‐scale program in the UK. began 1993 and has so far had varying levels long‐term success across 24 Although causes population persistence sites not well understood, continued suitability hypothesized play an important role. Here, we establish broad‐scale descriptors associated with current distribution natural hazel dormouse populations England, using ecological niche factor analysis remotely sensed, open‐source maps. We also apply generalized linear mixed effects models monitoring data reintroduced populations, revealing that factors strongly influence number animals present nest boxes. To aid conservation practitioners future site selection, illustrate practical application mapping help prioritize most appropriate woodlands reintroductions, county Cheshire as example. demonstrated here dormouse, this approach selection could be beneficial broad range species.

Population and individual-scale responses to patch size, isolation and quality in the hazel dormouse
Patch size, isolation and quality are key factors influencing species persistence in fragmented landscapes. However, we still lack a detailed understanding of how these variables exert their effects on populations inhabiting fragmented landscapes. At which ecological scale do they have an effect (e.g., individuals versus populations) and, on which demographic parameters? Answering these questio...
